Spider plants have long, strap-shaped leaves that grow from a central point. The leaves can be solid green or variegated with white or yellow stripes. They are not flat, but appear folded down the middle.
Flowers: Spider plants produce small, white, star-shaped flowers at the end of stems that can grow up to two feet long. Blooms occur in response to short days and long, uninterrupted nights for at least three weeks.
Offshoots: Spider plants are known for their ability to produce "spiders," or offshoots, which are small versions of the main plant with roots already established. These offshoots form at the ends of the flower stem and assorted branches.
Light: Spider plants prefer to grow in light shade outdoors, but can tolerate heavy shade. Indoors, a bright window or patio door that gets indirect sun is ideal.
Origin: Spider plants are native to coastal areas of South Africa.
